When Avengers: Secret Wars hits theatres at the end of 2025, the Multiverse Saga will reach a climax. The much-awaited movie is cloaked in secrecy, but Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has provided a trail of clues for us to follow, starting with his choice of screenwriter. Join us as we investigate all the potential outcomes, from the primary plot to the potential Avengers members.

What is currently known

Secret Wars is a title that fits the book if nothing else.

The sixth Avengers film hasn't shown much to the public until now. The Multiverse Saga, which concludes with Avengers: Secret Wars and brings the MCU's Phase Six to a close on November 28, 2025, was Feige's creation, and the term wasn't announced until this summer. Naturally, no release date is guaranteed, and one more than three years away could alter. That is currently Marvel's intended release date.

In addition to the title, we are also aware of the story's plotter: Michael Waldron.

Feige recently disclosed the hiring of a primary screenwriter for Secret Wars. Only a few days ago, Waldron received the approval for SW. He is the author of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and acted as the showrunner for Loki. That still remains an open director position, and Marvel Studios has recently had trouble filling it.

If past experiences provide any indicator, obtaining a director might be more complicated than acquiring a screenwriter. Scott Derrickson was first chosen to helm MOM after directing 2016's Doctor Strange, but he declined to owe to the scary catchall phrase of "creative disagreements." Next, Matt Shakman took over as the first director of Fantastic Four after Jon Watts decided to leave the project. Bassam Tariq most recently withdrew from the Blade revival, though Marvel claims that was due to scheduling issues as he will continue to work on the movie as a producer.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which will also debut in 2025, will provide moviegoers what should be the lead-in movie months before Secret Wars hits theatres. After Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Daniel Destin Cretton's other MCU project was a hit, and he was awarded the director's chair for that movie. It shouldn't take long for Marvel to reveal who will lead Secret Wars now that The Kang Dynasty has a director. Hopefully, it won't be another case of the revolving door.

Years of eagerness

Until the San Diego Comic-Con appearance in July, there had been persistent reports that a Secret Wars movie was in the works.

Just after the release of the final Avengers film, Endgame, the first rumors about an SW adaption in the MCU surfaced. The fourth Avengers movie was to be Joe and Anthony Russo's final in the MCU, according to their statement. Joe and Anthony Russo are the directors of multiple Marvel blockbusters, including Endgame, Infinity War, The Winter Soldier, and Civil War, as well as the two prior Captain America films. They did add, though, that it may be worth talking about if the chance to helm, say, Secret Wars came along.

From then, comic book fans started speculating about how Secret Wars may play out on the big screen. F eight and the rest of Marvel remained silent throughout this time. Then Jim Shooter, the man of the original Secret Wars comics from the 1980s, dropped a bombshell. He disclosed that a Marvel agent had contacted him about the Secret Wars rights, which weirdly enough had remained with Shooter, during a Megacon Orlando panel in 2021. That prompted the former author and head editor of Marvel to think that an SW movie was in development.

Fans were crossing their fingers for news on a Secret Wars movie amid all the online rumors and chatter. People were understandably excited when Feige made the major announcement at SDCC.

What will be shown in Secret Wars?

We only officially know who will write Secret Wars and when it will be released in theatres. Beyond that, a wide range of theories is now welcome. Anything is possible in the Multiverse, where there are infinite possibilities.

What can we anticipate from Secret Wars given all the unanswered questions surrounding it? Given Waldron's prior MCU appearances, it will most likely be an action-comedy, to start. Let's just hope that Sam Raimi, and not Waldron, was responsible for the many poor choices in MOM.

The most likely outcome is that Kang the Conqueror will somehow play a role in the story. The time-traveling, extraterrestrial antagonist will serve as the focal point of The Multiverse Saga, according to Feige, who spoke during the SDCC panel. Kang will likely be the final boss of Avengers 6 because SW will wrap up Phase Six and The Multiverse Saga. The plot may involve other elements, which might result in the MCU being restarted.

An important hint about the SW plan can be found in the Waldron news. There has been a lot of discussion about the potential course of the narrative and whether or not Feige will borrow any plot aspects from the comics.

Unknown Wars
Marvel Comics

The original 1984 tale was created to promote a fresh collection of Marvel toys. Focus groups reacted negatively to the phrases "secret" and "wars," so Shooter devised a straightforward story centered on The Beyonder, a deity who arbitrarily summoned a variety of heroes and villains to Battleworld for an enormous good-versus-evil clash. It served as a metaphor for children fighting among themselves in the sandbox after bringing all of their toys there.

An incursion between Earths from different dimensions was one of the plot ideas when the Secret Wars idea was revived in 2015. All the character variations and alternative universes that had been developed over the years were as a result thrown into yet another figurative sandbox. Who do you suppose was instrumental in bringing the ideas of variations and incursions to the MCU? William Waldron In fact, it's conceivable that he was already involved in the Secret Wars storyline before Loki aired and before he wrote MOM.

The cast of the next Avengers

The cast is one of the unanswered questions. Given that the word "Avengers" appears in the title, it is likely that Earth's Mightiest Heroes will make a comeback to the big screen. We won't see the original Avengers lineup since their story ended in Endgame, therefore we won't see them again (although anything can happen when the Multiverse and time travel are involved). That opens the possibility of a completely new team prepared to face Kang. Who are the job's most likely candidates?

Three individuals are anticipated to act as the MCU's cornerstones: Shang-Chi, Echo, and Daredevil. Even while Echo doesn't currently possess any superpowers, her current role as the host of the god-level cosmic entity The Phoenix Force in the comics may be a sign of things to come for her in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Doctor Strange would serve as the focal point of The Multiverse Saga, according to Feige. He also mentioned how "tremendously crucial" Loki will be to the MCU's future, which is something else to keep in mind. It would appear that those components are coming together given that Marvel assigned writing responsibilities to the screenwriter for MOM and the showrunner for Loki. By the time Secret Wars comes along, Doctor Strange and Loki (and possibly Sylvie) are nearly certain to be Avengers. Clea is also a viable candidate now that she was revealed in the MOM post-credits sequence.

Shuri is another figure who might help her establish herself in a new Avengers team. According to the most recent Wakanda Forever video, Shuri adopts the Black Panther persona in keeping with her comic book background. That would imply that the BP sequel will serve as her debut, with the ultimate objective of placing her on par with T'Challa as a superhero. Then, it would set the stage for Shuri to become a crucial member of the Avengers by Phase Six.

If the three remaining original Avengers make it through Phase Six, they'll also be involved in the mix in some way. By the end of Secret Wars, I believe Hulk, Thor, and Hawkeye may have served their purpose. At this moment, She-Hulk, Hercules, and Kate Bishop are ready to step in as their successors. They will most likely have a triumphant send-off in Secret Wars, not earlier.

The Fantastic Four, in addition to any future Avengers, are also anticipated to have a significant role in the Marvel ensemble movie. We'll have to wait to see who introduces those characters to the MCU because those roles have not yet been filled. You can be sure that when the train arrives at the Multiverse's edge for Secret Wars, they will be on board.

Again, all of this is conjecture. I apply the Kevin Feige Rule, which stipulates that nothing is definitive until Feige says otherwise (and which I totally made up). However, what initially makes the MCU so enjoyable is playing the guessing game.
